Description
The Executive Functions Test assesses how students use language in various executive functions, such as working memory, problem solving, inferring, predicting outcomes, and shifting tasks. It is designed to be used by speech-language pathologists and other professionals who work with language disorders. The test was normed on a nationally stratified sample of 723 students, and validity was established using 476 students with language disorders, learning disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders.

The EFT-E has four subtests:

  • Subtest A: Attention and Immediate Memory — Auditory. Short passages with three follow-up questions are used to evaluate ability to pay attention to details and remember them
  • Subtest B: Attention and Immediate Memory — Auditory and Visual. Students answer questions about what they've heard and seen in the pictures accompanying short vignettes. Two questions require attention to detail, and one presents a problem to be solved
  • Subtest C: Working Memory and Flexible Thinking. The student listens to a short passage and answers two "thinking" questions
  • Subtest D: Shifting. The examiner names four items in a category and identifies the category. The student is then asked to name a member of a similar but different category

    Administration and Scoring
Testing takes 45–60 minutes. All items are administered orally. Raw scores can be converted to standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents. The Manual helps the examiner identify error patterns and incorporate remediation strategies into a therapy program.
