Description
The UMAS is a collection of rating scales designed to assess student behavior in six areas related to successful school performance:

  • Cognition
  • Creativity
  • Leadership
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Science

The scores from the scales can be interpreted individually or combined into a total score, the General Aptitude Index (GAI). Either elevated or limited performance in these areas can help identify students who may have learning or intellectual disabilities or, alternatively, who may be gifted. Psychologists, diagnosticians, special educators, and related professionals can use the UMAS to support a referral for full diagnostic assessment, or to plan supportive services or special placement.

The UMAS was normed on a nationally representative sample of 2,492 students. Internal consistency reliability coefficients exceeded .97 for all subscales and was .99 for the GAI. Test-retest coefficients for the subscales ranged from .84 to .96, and was .96 for the overall composite, the GAI. Correlations of the GAI with measures of giftedness and achievement were large or very large in magnitude. The UMAS is able to accurately identify students with both low and high cognitive ability. Additional reliability and validity evidence is provided in the Manual.

    Administration and Scoring
Administration time is about 15 minutes. Six subscale scores and the overall composite, the GAI, are generated.
