Tasks of Executive Control (TEC)

Description
This test, administered and scored completely by computer, measures two foundational aspects of executive control: working memory and inhibitory control. The TEC is intended to be used for assessment of children and adolescents with developmental and acquired neurological disorders, including attention disorders, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

The TEC applies two integrated neuroscience methods: a paradigm that parametrically increases working memory load, and a go/no-go task that manipulates inhibitory control demand.

Three equivalent forms and two research forms are included, and the CD allows unlimited use.

The TEC showed high reliability for factor and summary scores (.68 to .99), and convergent validity based on correlations with the BRIEF, among other tests. Clinical samples were included in validity testing, including children and adolescents with ADHD, mild traumatic brain injury, learning disabilities, and Fragile X Syndrome.

Administration and Scoring
There are four sequential tasks for 5- to 7-year-olds, and six tasks for children and adolescents ages 8-18. Each task consists of on-screen instructions, a set of practice trials with feedback, and 100 timed-interval stimuli that require responses.

Scores are calculated for accuracy, response time, and response time variability as demands increase. Standardized change scores aid interpretation of any change between performance on various tasks and change in performance over time. A Score Report shows scores and profiles for a single administration, and a Client Report gives interpretive statements, scores, and profiles for a single administration. In addition, a Protocol Summary Report summarizes change over time when the TEC is administered more than once to the same student. An Interpretive Report is also available and can be helpful in targeting treatment recommendations.
