Description
The GOAL assesses functional motor abilities necessary for tasks of daily living. It consists of seven tasks. Four are fine-motor activities: (1) using utensils to cut, spear, and scoop; (2) opening keyed and combination padlocks; (3) coloring, cutting, folding, and taping a paper box; (4) organizing and filling a three-ring notebook. Three are gross-motor tasks: (5) putting on and taking off clothing; (6) bouncing and kicking a ball; and (7) carrying a loaded tray and avoiding obstacles.

The GOAL was standardized on a nationally representative sample of 616 children, plus a clinical sample of 152 children who had been referred for occupational therapy.

Administration and Scoring
The Record Form includes a Progress Chart to graph overall functional ability and identify target areas for intervention (Sensory, Postural, Praxis, and Motor Proficiency). Intervention The Record Form lists the underlying component skills needed for the specific functional tasks. Scores are based on 54 Steps, small units of observable functional behavior within the seven activities, scored on accuracy, independence, and speed. Scores are summed for Fine Motor and Gross Motor standard scores, as well as an overall Progress Score to track ongoing improvement. Percentiles are also provided.
