Test of Word Reading Efficiency - 2 (TOWRE-2)
Authors: Joseph Torgesen, PhD / Richard Wagner, PhD / Carol Rashotte, PhD
Description
The Test of Word Reading Efficiency uses real and phonemically regular nonsense words to provide an accurate measure of decoding and pronunciation. The TOWRE-2 is a quick and reliable way to assess efficiency of sight word recognition and phonemic decoding in children and adults. It provides professionals in schools and clinics with a reliable and valid measure of fluency and accuracy of print-based word-reading skills.
Use the TOWRE for:
Early Identification The TOWRE2 can be used in identifying children in the early elementary grades who will require more intensive or explicit instruction in word reading skills in order to make adequate progress in learning to read.
Diagnosis of Reading Disabilities The test is also being widely used as part of a battery of tests for diagnosis of specific reading disabilities in older children and adults. The TOWRE2 can be used either as a replacement for or as a supplement to standard diagnostic tests of context-free word reading ability currently in use.
Research Since its publication in 1999, the TOWRE has been widely used in research as a quick and reliable assessment of word-level reading skills in both large and small research populations.
Additional word lists have been included in this edition, and each of the two subtests, Sight Reading Efficiency and Phonetic Decoding Efficiency, now has four alternate forms, valuable for tracking progress. Newly normed on a nationally stratified sample of 1,700 people, the TOWRE-2 has reliability coefficients from 0.87 to above 0.90.
Administration and Scoring
The TOWRE-2 is a timed test and can be completed in just 5-10 minutes. It yields standard scores, percentile ranks, and age and grade equivalents. The Manual includes a comprehensive chapter on interpretation of TOWRE-2 results.
