Models for Writing

Author(s): Joanne F. Carlisle

A complete set of workbooks and teacher's guide

Models is an exciting new supplementary writing program for elementary students in mainstream or remedial classrooms who need carefully structured, sequential materials. It provides the instruction-in-writing component for any pre-existing writing program. Intended for grades 1 or 2 through 3 or 4, depending on the students basic skill levels.

Models helps ease students into writing naturally and easily with a host of activities. It focuses on the skills and strategies needed for writing building vocabulary, sentences, and paragraphs; learning about sequencing; using descriptors; and developing an awareness of structure, among other skills. Each unit provides many activities to build up, practice and consolidate these skills.

Broad Goals for Level A:

  • to bridge oral and written expression
  • to foster children's pleasure in written expression
  • to provide experiences with forms of written expression familiar to young students (e.g., letters, notes, stories)

Broad Goals for Level B:

  • to experience pleasure from creative aspects of writing
  • to gain an understanding of the principles of cohesion and development of written expression
  • to develop initial understanding of the processes of revision of written work
  • to understand different forms and functions of writing

Broad Goals for Level C:

  • to learn idea-collection and planning processes (e.g., brainstorming)
  • to understand and use structure in writing different types of compositions
  • to understand principles of unity, cohesion, and completeness
  • to develop skills in revising written work for content and accuracy

The extremely thorough Teacher's Guide tells how to prepare students for each unit, looks at instructional issues, and offers scores of supplementary writing activities for use at school or home.

Level B is out of print and no longer available.
